If you’re out of work and wondering what to do next, don’t overlook the valuable skills and experience you can bring to other roles, says Justine Vaughan, UK Operational HR Director at OCS.

When Jonathan Fillery was put at risk of redundancy, he used his experience as a head chef to successfully apply for the job of Facilities Manager at OCS UK’s Tilgate head office. He is now pursuing a Level 3 qualification in facilities management through the OCS apprenticeship programme.

For Jonathan, the attention to detail and timekeeping that were critical in his catering job are also key to his role in facilities management. Justine agrees: “This is an opportunity to look at retraining and harnessing the skills you have gained during your catering career.”

Your experience of working in a team and under pressure, of upholding standards of hygiene and cleanliness, is transferrable. You may be organised, with experience of report writing, keeping to a budget, and other administrative skills – these are all valuable.

The National Careers Service website is a good place to start. Its skills assessment function will help you establish your skills and suitable career alternatives. There is support out there for those considering retraining, including funding for maths, English and other key skills such as customer service. Visit go-train.co.uk to find out more or ask at your local Jobcentre Plus.

Traineeships and apprenticeships are also available – whatever your age. At OCS, we are creating new opportunities for those looking for work, as well as developing colleagues like Jonathan, with a bespoke apprenticeship programme that reflects our culture and our values. We value the customer service skills of former catering employees, so if you’re considering a career change, visit findajob.dwp.gov.uk and search ‘OCS apprentice’ to view our current apprenticeships. You’ll also find our catering vacancies at ocsjobs.co.uk.
