We understand that this is a very challenging time for everyone in the hospitality and catering industry, however the FSC and its members are committed to supporting people and getting them back into the workplace if they’ve been displaced. Below is a step by step guide on how to prepare for that all-important job interview when it arises, irrespective of the role or industry.
So, once you have had confirmation of your interview – let’s get to work.
Research Research Research
A good place to start is to research the company. You are likely to already know the basics when you submitted your application. Now is the time to delve deeper. Most companies have an online presence and this is a great place to start. What have they been up to? How was the company formed? What are their values? Who are their partners or clients? How long have they been in business? Take notes with you if you struggle to remember. Think about how your role fits with what you have learnt. If possible, research the person[s] who will be interviewing you. Check out their LinkedIn Profile. This can really help settle nerves if you’re nervous. Taking the time to do this research, shows that you are serious about the role and can really help to secure the job.
Examine the job description
It would now be a great time to review the job description. Go through each responsibility. It is clear? Do you need clarification? If so, consider creating questions if you’re unsure. Remember an interview is a two-way conversation. Make sure that role is right for you too. You may also want to understand how this role fits within the organisation. Does it form part of a team? What does the career path look like? If you have secured an interview which is within a different industry, how do your transferable skills support this role? Have some examples ready.
Prepare to be questioned
Put yourself in the position of the interviewer. What types of questions do you think they may ask? Come up with suitable answers which will highlight your skills and experiences. If you’re unsure, have a look online for some of the types of questions you could be asked. Talk to other people about their experience of interviews. It may give you some insight into what to expect. Some interviews may be more informal, others however are very structured with lots of questions. It is good to understand they can vary quite considerably from company to company. The key is to be well prepared for all eventualities.
Prepare your own questions
As you’re doing your research, make a note of the questions which come to mind. Be curious and keep them relevant to the business and the role. It may be wise to have these written down when you go into the interview. You may find that some of these questions are answered within the interview conversation. If that is the case, you can scroll down your list and ask the ones which have not been answered. It is also a good idea to take in a notepad and pen to write notes. Questions may arise throughout the process. You may want to write these down and ask them later.
Dress appropriately
Plan and prepare what you will be wearing. You do not want to be panicking on the day. Plan this out a couple of days in advance so you can focus on important things. It will also help you remain calm on the day. You will also want to ensure that irrespective of the role, you dress smartly to make a lasting impression. It sounds so simple, but yet it is easy to forget how impactful this can be.
Plan your route
Make sure you know where you are going and how long it takes to get there. If you can, go online and work out the easiest route, then add on some extra time in case to allow for any delays. The last thing you want is to arrive late.
Get a good night’s sleep
Feeling refreshed and alert will help you cope with any unforeseen circumstances and answer any questions with clear thinking. It can also positively affect your mood and how you present yourself before, during and after the interview.
Lastly, remember getting an interview is a great achievement. With the correct preparations and planning, you will put yourself in a great position to be successful.
Good Luck
